Maurie McInnis to Become Next President of Yale University

NEW YORK, NY —Today, Stony Brook University announced that president Maurie McInnis is stepping down after a four-year tenure to become the next president of Yale University. McInnis will assume her new position effective July 1.

President since March 2020, McInnis led Stony Brook through the COVID-19 pandemic and helped shepherd its continued rise into a world-class research institution. Under McInnis’s leadership, Stony Brook was named the anchor institution of The New York Climate Exchange research center on Governors Island; awarded one of the largest gifts to a university in American history with a $500 million unrestricted endowment from the Simons Foundation; and achieved its highest ever rankings among U.S. News and World Reports Best Colleges list.

McInnis has served as Chair of the Board of Directors of The New York Climate Exchange since its formation. Her vision and skills as a convener were key to launching the initiative, and she played a key role in the appointment of Stephen Hammer as CEO of The Exchange. In a letter to board members Hammer wrote, “It is with great enthusiasm that I congratulate Maurie for this achievement! It seems Yale has found out what we already knew, that Maurie is a visionary leader who can propel a top-tier institution to even greater heights. I know that this announcement means change is coming, but I also know Maurie’s commitment to The Exchange is unwavering. In the coming days we will share more information about how Stony Brook and The Exchange will navigate the transition to a new chair, while maintaining institutional knowledge and continuing to leverage Maurie’s passion for this project.”

Stony Brook University remains the anchor institution of The New York Climate Exchange, and its commitment to the project is deep and lasting. The institutions and governance systems set up for The Exchange are fit to withstand changes in leadership and anything else the future has in store.

Please join us all in wishing Maurie McInnis congratulations!
