Research Associate

Alaina Van Slooten is a Research Associate at The Exchange where she supports the organization’s programming development. With a background in urban planning and sustainability, she is committed to building climate resilience and climate justice at the local scale.


Alaina’s experience includes research and advocacy for nature-based solutions as part of The Nature Conservancy’s New York City team. In partnership with stakeholders across the city, she supported the convening of the Forest for All NYC coalition and the release of the State of the Urban Forest in NYC report. She has also worked for the urban planning firm, Karp Strategies; the sustainable agriculture start-up, Indigo Agriculture; the consulting firm, Boston Consulting Group; and the restaurant, Blue Hill.


Alaina holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from Northeastern University and a Master of City and Regional Planning from Georgia Tech. In her master’s program, she continued to explore themes of climate resilience, health, and the built environment, while building expertise in GIS and analytics. She was selected as a Thera Richter fellow and the Georgia Planning Association Student of the Year. In her free time, she enjoys exploring the city on foot, cooking, and eating!
